Lawrence is America's #1 sports town!

The guys who broadcast from Allen Fieldhouse on ESPN always stay at the Eldridge. I love these guys, they're incredibly friendly and nice. Recently, one of the gentleman who comes and stays here wrote an article about the best cities in the Big 12. As you can imagine, Lawrence ranked in at #1. Here's the article:

Ranking the Big 12 towns

November 8, 2008 12:25 AM

Posted by ESPN's Eric Posman

As a veteran of ESPN/ABC College Football and College Basketball broadcasts, I do my fair share of frequent-flying. But to jet-set to the Big 12, that's only half the battle. Find a rental car you like and break out the GPS, we're going to caravan through America's Heartland and check out the towns that house your favorite teams. There is no scientific basis for these rankings, and by no means have I seen every restaurant or hot spot in each town. But I have been to all of them, multiple times.

1. Lawrence, Kan. -- The quintessential college town. A true blend of sports and studies in a bucolic slice of Americana. Allen Fieldhouse, home of the reigning championships is one of the holiest sites in sports, with an A-plus crowd. Not to mention the rustic, refurbished Eldridge, home of my favorite hotel bar/restaurant and better mac-n-cheese than my mom's. Did I mention the Eldridge is haunted? I stayed in the supposedly haunted guest suite this past February. I can't confirm the supernatural, but I did experience "strange" occurrences. If you manage to survive the night, you can roll out of bed and hit the coffee place across the street or any other joint within a couple of blocks no matter how cold the weather is. Massachusetts Ave. is one-stop shopping for just about everything.

Here's the inside of Allen Fieldhouse on game night:

You can see how packed the games usually are. And if you really want to know how much KU fans love their teams, check out this picture of downtown after KU won the NCAA championship, taken from the roof of the Eldridge.

The Eldridge Ghost

If you've ever been into the Eldridge, there's a good chance you've seen the picture we keep on the front desk of the ghost that lives in the hotel. Speculation and professional accounts attest that the ghost is most likely Colonel Eldridge, whom the hotel is named after. They say that ghosts tend to stick around when they have unfinished business. I'm not sure what Colonel Eldridge's unfinished business might be, but it might have to do with being undenominational, or that 3 of his 7 children died in infancy. There's also the Beetlegeuse hypothesis. In Beetlegeuse (which is a movie with Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Michael Keaton) the Maitland's die, and after they die, they are trapped to live out their afterlife in the house they lived in while they were alive.

In any case, we occasionally have ghost hunters come and do some exploring at the Eldridge. CLICK HERE to view our channel 6 news report from one of the hunts. More recently though, we had a paranormal investigation team come and take some pictures. They noticed something interesting in these pictures which I am going to share with you now!

Colonel Eldridge
This is a picture of Colonel Eldridge's chair. This is a chair that we keep in in the maintenance cellar in the basement. We never move it because it is the chair where Colonel Eldridge sits. You'll notice to the right of the chair, on the concrete, the shadow of a bearded face. Here's a profile of Colonel Eldridge so you can compare.
Colonel Eldridge Chair

Here we have a picture of the basement exit door that leads out the back of the hotel. The shine in this photograph is clearly the flash from the camera, but look closely and you can see what appears be a skull or outline of a face.

This is a shot of the Eldridge lobby with one of our handsome night auditors coming off the elevator. Again here, you can see a spirit lurking behind Brandon in the elevator.
Eldridge Lobby Spirit

We discovered from the ghost investigators that when cameras take pictures of the supernatural, that often times the camera will not pick up the photons from through a spirit. So, when the picture comes out, it comes across as an orb. With that in mind, take note of these two pictures that were taken in the Big 6 room in the basement of the hotel. You'll notice that the orb moves from one picture to the next.
